Nick Love's latest grit-flick takes another step closer to tasting and swallowing unlawful chaos Homegrown filmmaker Nick Love puts a serious spin on his craft with this hard-hitting drama that traverses very dodgy territory indeed. At the core of his self-penned plot is Sergeant Bryant (Sean Bean), a former British paratrooper who returns home to discover a country steeped in unlawful chaos. A chance meeting with a berserker security guard (Sean Harris) and a series of unfortunate events lead to him rounding up a posse of crime victims (Danny Dyer, Lennie James and Rupert Friend), who he transforms into the title’s vigilante outlaws. Together they set about illegally sorting out the shit the government and police have failed to effectively address. If Love’s previous features have been regarded as exercises in gratuitous violence, here he proves he’s got his finger on the pulse of our disturbing times. But while this gritty, unflinching movie does have political content, ultimately Outlaw is a disturbing character study of the lengths ordinary folk will go to when pushed to breaking point. And, although badder and madder than The Football Factory and The Business, by tempering the ‘lad’ aesthetic of those films, Love has produced a superbly executed thriller that proves to be his tour de force.
